PWBA Logo

The Brief
The Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) was relaunched in 2015 after a 12 year hiatus. I was asked to design a logo that used USBC brand colors and show the strength of the women who would bowl in it.
The Process
For inspiration, I drew from the various sports logos, statues of Greek goddesses, and their previous logos to bring the mark to life. From there I took pictures of real women bowlers in action and turned them into single-color graphics. Playing with a combination of the logos and Greek goddess inspiration, the women bowler graphics, and association initials, I began creating concepts. Wanting to showcase the strength of women, I wanted the female bowler to be a strong aspect of the logo, so a lot of time was devoted to finding new ways to integrate the figure in an empowering way.
The Solution
Through those efforts, I landed on the final design for the PWBA logo. The use of negative space for the 'B' in PWBA allowed us to enhance the visual created by the female bowler, while still giving prominence to the association name. Women in sports are often underappreciated and don't garner the respect demanded by their expertise. Identifying what this logo needs to represent was critical. I wanted this to first and foremost highlight the sports aspect in a powerful and classic way. It had to reflect the history of women bowlers while bringing a timeless visual that represents the future for women bowlers.
